Synopsis

When Kahlan's feelings for Richard begin to compromise her mission, she sets off in search of another Confessor to guide the Seeker. In the meantime, Richard and Zedd are attacked by a group of D'Haran soldiers and a Mord'Sith named Denna. After capturing Richard, Denna attempts to coerce him into joining forces with the evil Darken Rahl.

Review by Tracy Casebere

Legend of the Seeker just got sexy. It also just got a bit scary. What's Kahlan doing stabbing Richard? Obviously Shota's last words are still playing havoc with Kahlan's mind. And Richard is still playing havoc with Kahlan's heart. So much so she decides to leave and protect Richard from herself after her nightmare of killing him. That's her excuse anyway and she's sticking to it.

What no one counted on though was Denna, a fearsome Mord'Sith and Mistress to all, whose mission it is to capture Richard and subject him to repeated bouts of torture (training) with her agiel (think policeman's baton but with the capability to cause immense pain when touched.) Though one might be forgiven for thinking Richard was at his next armpit waxing session the way he'd been strung up by Denna. And that is torture, believe me.

Kahlan meanwhile is busy recruiting a new Confessor for the Seeker, who unbeknownst to her is being broken, mind, body and soul. That is until Zedd comes running through the forest and reveals all to her. Considering he magically vanished out of danger earlier, why is he running to reach her? Didn't he just say himself that he's nothing but an old man in some robes? He shouldn't give himself a heart attack. Who else is going to give us pearls of wisdom with more frequency than a radio?

Yet despite the darkened tone of the episode, its subject matter actually focuses a lot on love and free will. Richard finds himself questioning his love for Kahlan. His greatest test here isn't just to see how much pain he can withstand, it's to realise how much he loves Kahlan. This alone helps Richard stay sane throughout his imprisonment with Denna.

The Confessor Kahlan had found also gives us a view on free will, albeit a morally wrong one. In her wisdom, the Confessor had confessed an entire village of people to "better them." Yes, it borders on enslavement but it was done in the name of good. It shows us yet another consequence to a Confessor's power and it's interesting to see the moral conflict Kahlan has within herself and whether she should use the slaves to help free Richard or not.

In the end she decides to go in there and get him herself. What ensues is a test of love, trust and hope. Oh and a lot of arse kicking. Kahlan having to trust that Richard won't kill her on Denna's command, Richard having to trust his love for Kahlan is strong enough to withstand Denna's hold over him, and hope that they both get out of this alive.

Thankfully they do, but to what cost? Richard, who is now undoubtedly stronger from the whole experience and wiser, comes away with the knowledge that he and Kahlan can never be together, and that is sure to hurt. Although probably not as much hurt as the book fans are going to feel once they discover that Denna doesn't die at the end of the episode. Although if it means more episodes like this one, we're glad she's alive.
