Synopsis
While Zedd and Cara follow a lead in tracking down the Stone of Tears, Kahlan learns of a mysterious girl who proves to be the only other living Confessor. She and Richard set out to rescue the teenager from evil forces and prevent her from accidentally unleashing the power she possesses.
Review by Tracy Casebere
Once upon a time, in a locked and lonely tower, lived a young girl that went by the name of Annabelle. And it just so happened that Annabelle was one of the last two remaining Confessor’s; the other being Kahlan.
The problem was Annabelle wasn’t aware of her powers, so when she finally managed to escape her tower, she accidently confessed a right bloody twit named Flynn – yes, the-most-annoying-travelling-companion-ever-even-more-so-then-Renn-from series-one, Flynn. You know the one with the rune on his hand? Keep up.
So Annabelle, having never met another man before except her father, falls hopelessly in love with Flynn, and because he’s been confessed by her, he loves her back. The trouble is, Kahlan explains the Confessor situation to Annabelle (i.e. WE’RE ALL THAT’S LEFT) and tells her in no uncertain terms that she is going straight to Aydindril to learn how to use her powers properly (i.e. NOT CONFESS EVERYTHING IN SIGHT thank you very much.)
This would have been fine except wherever Annabelle goes, Flynn is sure to follow. But Kahlan and Richard need Flynn (or rather his hand) to locate the Stone of Tears. And-not-wanting-to-be –apart-EVER-even-for-a-second *breathe* Flynn and Annabelle do what, er, most confessed lovers do, they elope.
Richard and Kahlan eventually catch up with them and was about to haul some major Confessor ass back to Aydindril, when Annabelle suddenly confesses Richard. You know, the SEEKER. And Kahlan unsurprisingly looks all murderous and upset, because Richard no longer loves her, but rather Annabelle. Boo hoo.
Having decided that perhaps she’d be better off as the last remaining Confessor after all, Kahlan does herself (and Richard too although he’s too consumed by love to realise) a favour and prepares to kill Annabelle herself; thus releasing Richard from his confession. But Richard can’t allow anything to happen to his dear, Mistress Annabelle, and so he saves her with his big and scary Sword of Truth. That thing’s not so righteous now when it’s pointing at you, is it Kahlan?
Knowing that Richard would kill her without a moment’s thought, (or care) Kahlan relays the whole sorry tale to Zedd and Cara who’ve just got back from staking out a crypt (it’s less interesting than it sounds, believe me.)
A magical standoff ensures. Kahlan wants Richard, while Richard wants Annabelle, who really wants Flynn, who Zedd also wants because his hand is the key to finding the Stone of Tears. Meanwhile, Cara just wants to kill something so she can escape this madness (and we don’t blame her one bit.)
Trouble is, Richard won’t allow Annabelle to be killed, and she doesn’t want to die, because she loves Flynn – who in turn... oh forget it. Basically they all want something they can’t have.
Zedd then hypothesises that perhaps Annabelle could be fully drained of her Confessor power, which could potentially release Richard and Flynn from their Confession. Result!
FINALLY somebody with a bit of sense. So off Cara and Kahlan go, putting their differences aside (YOU KILLED MY SISTER – I WAS A TORTURED CHILD) for oh, about a minute, and retrieve the magical artefact that will help get them out of this stupid mess.
But before Annabelle goes through with becoming Confessorless, she proposes something to Kahlan. She basically says, HAVE RICHARD’S BABY! Have it NOW before he becomes de-confessed. So an over-shy Kahlan, and an ever obedient confessed-Richard, start to get it on. But the Mother Confessor has doubts halfway through (it took her that long to realise she’d be effectively raping the Seeker?!) and calls the whole thing off.
Thank god.
Cutting an already too long story short, Annabelle successfully manages to get rid of her Confessor powers, Richard and Flynn are finally released from their love-induced-enslavement; meanwhile Flynn only bloody goes and decides to stay with Annabelle anyway. Damn hormones!
The End.
Oh wait. They also manage to open the crypt with Flynn’s hand before he buggers off with Annabelle.
Now it’s The End.
Hang on, inside the crypt is a compass that will hopefully lead them to the Stone of Tears.
OK NOW it’s The End.
But not before Richard and Kahlan wonder WHAT IF to both of them getting down and nasty in the forest.
And they all pretended to live happily ever after.
The End (for now.)
