Synopsis

Richard and Cara help a small group of villagers escape ruthless slave traders, killing the aggressors in the process. The deaths disappoint the matriarch of the victimized people, a pacifist group called the Minders. Some of them, though, are tired of turning the other cheek while they are being subjugated and slaughtered, and enlist the Seeker's aid in showing them how to protect themselves against future attacks. But Richard's attempt to teach the Minders self-defense skills unleashes their building rage, which threatens to consume them and destroy the Seeker.

Review by Tracy Casebere

I’m angry – furious! Oh wait, no. Fury is the title of this episode. I’m fine. In fact I’m more than fine; I just watched a pretty damned good episode of Legend of the Seeker.

Cara and Richard come across a group of people who are getting the crap kicked out of them by some playground bullies because they refuse to fight back. The people are named Minders (or as I like to call them – out of their Minders) and they claim to love their enemies just as much they love their friends and family. Nice sentiments, but when someone has a knife to my throat, I know I won’t be making any declarations of love thank you very much.

Anyway, one of them finally see’s sense and asks Richard to teach them how to fight - which he does - and all goes well until they actually, you know, fight. It turns out the Minders really are a peaceful people thanks to a little unhelpful bit of magic which binds all their fury, rage – PMT.

However, when someone fights against this binding, they become catatonic and if left, will die.
Thankfully Richard thought it a good idea to bring along a first aid kit known as Zedd. Zedd magically heals the catatonic Minders (which I believe is a totally cool name for a band by the way) and ends up depleting his own magic and energy reserves. This is obviously a nice way to take Zedd out of the picture so that Richard can be left unchecked for the remainder of the episode. And go unchecked he does.

Because some of the Minders are no longer bound by magic, they are free to fight. Richard once again takes up arms and teaches them the old one two. However, when Richard gets struck in the face during practice by one of the Minders named Kur, it unleashes in him a fury that makes him RAISE HIS VOICE TO KAHLAN. He gets angry, think big green giant only without the sweet corn. And the Minders follow him like Mindless sheep and become just as angry too.

So there’s a bunch of narcissistic, furious, killing machines running around the Midlands all wanting blood. Give them fangs and they’d make great vampires. But instead they get swords which they’ve just pinched from their enemies, and with them they kill. And kill. And while we’re sitting down on our nice comfy sofas with perhaps a mug of tea, they’re still killing.

Eventually they stop but only when Kahlan and Cara intervene. Kahlan gets a nice Sword of Truth in her face for her trouble, and Cara actually gets hit by one. It’s enough to bring Richard to his senses and return back to Zedd where another great revelation is about to be revealed.

The explanation is a bit drawn out by an almost recovered Zedd, but I’ll sum it up for you in a sentence, or two. Richard is the descendant of a warrior (who was also a Rahl – their family really could have benefited from a little anger management) whose strength and power came from feeding off of the fury within themselves.

This is why Richard flew off the proverbial handle. Couple this knowledge with the magic of the Sword of Truth, and we now know why the Minder’s became so angry; they were magically bound to Richard through the magic of the sword. Whenever he was angry, they were too.

Like all things in life designed to cause problems, there’s no cure for Richard’s fury – he just has to learn to control it. And the scene in which he learns to do that is one of my favourites so far this series. With Zedd coaxing Richard to reveal just what’s been getting on his goat for the last series and a half, it all comes flooding out in a style Jeremy Kyle would surely be proud of! I know I was.

With his fury mastered at least for today, it’s time for the group to do WHAT MUST BE DONE and hunt down that elusive stone of tears.

Remember kids, swords don’t kill people, magically spelled people kill people.
