Mailbag #1

Welcome to the "You asked, we answered" edition of our Friday mailbag.

It's been a pretty slow week for Seeker related news (well if you excuse the whole WILL THERE BE A THIRD SERIES?! debate) as the show's been on a break. But that hasn't stopped you sending in your questions.

In fact, the most commonly asked question was, "Will there be a third series?" something which I will be discussing further down the page.

Things to note: I am British, therefore I say "series" instead of "season".

Potato, Po-tar-toe.

Now, on to the questions!

Question 1: Too many breaks!

Mandy asked:
Hi I’m a big Legend of the Seeker fan. I have read the first two books in the Sword of Truth Series (the basis for this television series) and I never miss an episode, Sunday night at 8 pm. I know that Episode 14- Bound doesn’t air till March 21st. I was wondering why it didn’t air this Sunday. And why there have been so many delays in this season. Thank you for all your updates for this show.

Teesee replied:
Ah, that's where my knowledge is a little bit hazy. As I'm hail from the UK, series 2 airs on a different schedule (in fact we're a few episodes behind) and so I'm not all entirely sure how TV schedules work over in the US. In the UK, television series usually run without interruptions unless there is a major event on that needs to be aired using the same timeslot the series uses, or if there are unforeseen problems such as, I don't know, the world imploding.

Legend of the Seeker has 22 episodes per series, which is quite a lot despite being a common amount, but they might've decided to put in a mid series break (which is about right as the break occurred at the end of episode 13.)

I'm assuming the other break you are referring to is the one that happened around December time and then resumed in January. Again, Christmas is a packed busy time for television schedules so it's not uncommon for breaks to occur during this time.

Question 2: The importance of being hairiest.

MotherConfessor asked:
Okay so I don't know if you've read the prequel about Abbey and Zedd, but it kind of talked about hair being a ranking in how important you are. I'm half-way through the first book and I was wondering if in the actual series it talks about hair being a ranking? If you could let me know that would be great!!!

Teesee replied:
For those not familiar with the books, the hair length of a female in the Midland's denotes their importance and position of power in society. A woman with short hair would be of little consequence, and the longer the hair gets, the more important they are. The female with the longest hair in the Midlands would be the Mother Confessor, otherwise known as Kahlan.

I'm assuming when you say "actual series" you mean the Sword of Truth series as opposed to the television series; if so, then yes. The hair ranking system is explained and talked about in the books.

Otherwise, the television show does not follow this system even though Kahlan has considerably long hair in the show. An interesting fact, one of Cara's punishments in the show (apart from the beating) was the cutting off of her long plaited braid. A Mord'Sith is easily identified by the length of their braid. It was cut off to effectivley demote her as a Mord'Sith. It's similar to the book’s hair ranking system, but not quite.

Question 3: Series 3, or no series 3. That is the question.

Asked by a lot of people:
Will there be a third series?

Teesee replied: There's lot of speculation regarding series 3 of Legend of the Seeker, some of which is good, some of which isn't. First, the facts:

I read that Legend of the Seeker has been cancelled, is this true?
No. Series 3 has yet to be confirmed, that's all. This does not mean it's been cancelled, or that it's not going to happen. It just means nothing has been finalised or announced yet. I'd expect the announcement on whether there will be a third series or not will come around May time.

But I read Tribune has dropped the show. How can they justify making another series if none of the TV channels will show it?
The Tribune network probably owns around 50% of the syndicated channels that Legend of the Seeker currently airs on in the US. And yes, it's true that Tribune won't be renewing their contract for any new series of Legend of the Seeker. But this doesn't mean that a third series will not be made, just that Tribune won't be the ones airing it.

Another channel corporation may decide to get on board and a name that's been thrown around is SyFY (their UK channel currently airs series 1 and 2 of Legend of the Seeker.) Whether or not they or anyone else decides to pick it up again is another question, one which can only be answered in due time when more information becomes available.

Do you think there will be a series 3?
I'm a postively hopeful person by nature, so what other answer can I give but YES! I do believe series 3 will go ahead. What's that based on? Lot's of stuff, mainly faith. Gotta love the stuff.

I really want a third series - what can I do to help?
Ahh, now you're talking! It's times like these a little help can go a long way. We have a whole news post dedicated to what you can do to help series 3 become a reality. Get writing and remember, keep it nice!

Question 4: Outside of the Seeker.

Kim Gingerick asked:
If there is no talk or plans for a season 3, does the cast of Legend of the Seeker have any future movie or tv plans already in the making?

Teesee replied:
As already answered above, there's a lot of talk about series 3 but that doesn't mean the cast of the show don't have other projects on the go too. IMDB is a good source to find out whether or not cast members are set to appear in other films or TV projects in the future.

Question 5: I have an idea!

Darren Holien asked:
I'm sure you get this all the time, but I had an episode play out in my head while attempting to fall asleep. Difference is you haven't made it yet. But I could sure see it in my mind. So much so that I did something I've not done before. I got up and wrote it out. I knew I would not be able to sleep until I saw it through.

If you have any interest in reading my 2am vision, just ask. I will gladly forward my work straight to you no strings attached.

Teesee answered:
What an awesome thing to happen! Creativity happens at all hours and it's great you managed to write it all out through to the end.

However, I (and the website) have nothing to do with Legend of the Seeker from a casting, writing, producing or any other standpoint. We're a fan site which means everything we are is created by fans. So if you were to send us your work, we couldn't actually do anything with it other than read it and say: that's good, or that's complete and utter rubbish - what the hell were you thinking?! (We wouldn't really be that rude.)

But you did raise an interesting point, and one which I will attempt to answer. The writing team at Legend of the Seeker do not want you to send them your episode/script/writing ideas. By doing this you are opening up a whole load of legal issues regarding copyright and ownership. Indeed if you did send them scripts, they'd probably send them back to you unopened, or put them straight in the bin.

So there you are folks. Our first mailbag answered, dusted, and exhausted. If you have something to ask or just want to get your point across, be sure to send it in on time for next week's mailbag. Only the best questions get published so make 'em good.

And don't forget you can share you own thoughts on the above questions and answers by leaving a comment below.

In response to question #5 above...there are a lot of websites for fanfiction that you could post your script on for people to read and give feedback on if that is something that would interest you. I think one of them is http://kahlanrichardlots.proboards.com/index.cgi is one of them.

In regards to question 2, I believe it should be noted that Mord'Sith are from D'hara, an entirely separate territory from the Midlands and not subject to the laws of the Midlands. The Mord'Sith in the books kept their braids both for practicality and intimidation factor; it was part of their uniform. In the Midlands, like in feudal Europe, it was forbidden to dress above one's station. Hair length was the most noticeable indication of a person's status, in the Midlands. D'hara had no such law. D'hara was a dictatorship and to suggest that anyone, other than Lord Rahl, had a station above obedient servant would be treason. Another interesting fact, in the books, Confessors were physically incapable of cutting their own hair. To do so would result in pain so extreme that the woman would be rendered unconscious before making any progress.

I am wondering why, after all this time, have they still not made a uk dvd version of this series. The American version has been out for ages but I haven't got a multi region dvd player or the required tv either. Nor have I got Sky or Virgin. The only way I havce been able to watch any of this awesome show is through free streaming on the internet but now even that doesn't appear possible as all the sights that say they do it just want you to fill out endless questionaires and never actually get to the show. Lets just say if I was holding the sword of truth right now there would be some serious rage going on. Please if anybody out there knows of a uk dvd release date let me know because my only other options are buying a new dvd player and tv and getting the us import or moving to America. Now I really like this show but cannot afford to spend money like that. Does anyone else have the same problem?

I want to get t-shirts or bumper stickers to show my Following with Seeker. I'm not to keen on the ones they have on cafe press, but I LOVE the one I just saw on the Save the Seeker link of the "Save the Mordsith" with Cara's picture. That would make an AWESOME T-shirt, sticker, etc.
Why don't they have more of a selection on shirts, etc.....

Sonia M says,
LotS is one of the best shows I have ever watched in my entire life!I am currently reading "Stone of Tears" after reading "Wizard's First Rule". Though different from the original book, I believe the path taken by the writers of the show is equally excellent! I'm from Kenya and I recently bought DVD 1 off Amazon. My mates and I love the show and it would be a shame if Season 3 isn't produced. It has an amazing cast!
Debbie Fisher says,
