Cypher Family
George CypherGeorge Cypher lived in the Midlands during the rule of Panis Rahl, but after his demise he moved to the Midlands.
George Cypher was a trader and was often away looking for special items. It seemed George preferred the looking rather than the finding, because he was always happy to part with his loot.
George Cypher lost his second wife, Richard's mother, when an angry customer accidentally knocked over an oil lamp and then dragged him outside. His wife managed to save her son Richard and her adopted son Michael, but later dies when she ran back into the burning house to save an unknown object. After that incident George taught Richard to never loose control of his anger.
Three weeks prior to the beginning of the book, George had been found dead in his house. He had been savagely murdered, his belly was cut open and his guts were spread all over the floor. It would seem the murderer had been looking for something, because the house had also been ransacked.
Richard grew up believing Richard Cypher to be his true father, but he would soon learn otherwise.
George set up everything so that Richard would be able to go on and become the man we know him to be.
Michael Cypher
Michael Cypher is Richard’s older brother by three years. As young children, Richard and Michael had a very strong relationship and they would often play together building forts out of sticks and dirt. At that time Michael used to help Richard.
After his mother died, Michael became a difficult person to become close too and his relationship with his father deteriorated. Michael’s desire was to become someone important, he would make friends with anyone important and enjoyed spending time with the rich and powerful.
Michael lived in a “massive structure of white stone, set back quite a distance from the road” with white marble floors, walls and columns, because anyone could go out and make what they wanted wood, but if you wanted marble you had to hire a lot loads of people that lived in wood houses to do it for you.
After Michael became a Councillor of Westland, he encouraged people to come to him with information of any kind first. Michael often said that, information is the coin of power, and every farmer with a tale would receive an ear and a favour, if the tale proved true.
Three weeks after his father’s murder, Michael became First Councillor, making him responsible for everything and anyone in the Westland. He had always wanted this position, but the appointment only made him even more intolerant than usual.
Richard grew up believing, Michael to be his brother, but in time he will learn that they are only half brothers and that he is a defector to Darken Rahl.
