Richard VS Link
I don’t know about you, but I’m a huge Zelda fan. It was one of the first games I ever played when I was a little girl. And with my brothers out playing football, I’d sneak a go on their SNES and load up A Link to the Past in the hopes of completing a dungeon level before they returned. Eventually they caught on to my antics and I was told in no uncertain terms to GET OUT OF THEIR ROOM.I was then asked to come back in and help them out with a bit they were stuck on.
My point is - the affinity I’ve had for characters that run around in the forest has clearly stayed with me long into adulthood. Take Richard Rahl for example; before he became the Seeker of Truth he was a woods guide living alone in the forest – until one day his destiny demanded his attention and he was soon off travelling the world.
Then there’s Link, the main character from the Zelda series, who started off little more than a kid who also lived alone in the forest – before ultimately taking up the mantle of the Hero of Time (amongst other titles) and ridding the world of bad things; like evil-doers with bad hair. Yes, I’m talking about Ganondorf.
They are what you’d call your classic coming-of-age hero. They’ve both grown up not knowing a single thing about the outside world. One wields The Master Sword, the other, the Sword of Truth. And both have a destiny that involves stopping dark and evil forces from taking over the world; in Link’s case Ganondorf, in Richard’s – Darken Rahl.
It’s a formula that seems to have stood the test of time: with over fifteen games to date and counting for the Zelda series and eleven books for Richard in the Sword of Truth series – is it any wonder why these two characters have remained so popular?
Whatever the reason, one thing is for sure: both characters kick some major ass and they both do it looking good. But what if they were pitted against each other? Who would win? Let’s look at a couple of facts.
Richard commands two sides of magic; the subtractive and additive, although he cannot focus it at will – it’s more instinctual.
Link controls magic but it’s mainly in the capacity of using magical objects. He does make up one third of the magical Triforce though – courage.
Richard wields the Sword of Truth – it has been stated it contains the experience and knowledge of the past Seeker’s of Truth. The magic of the sword works on rage.
Link wields the Master Sword which repels evil. The downside is that it often has to be “recharged” to be at maximum power.
If they were to battle on strength alone I think Richard would win. He’s a grown man who’s killed over a hundred men single handed.
If they were to battle on courage – I think Link would win. He stood up to Ganondorf as nothing more than a child.
If they were to battle on magic, I think Link would win as his magic can be called upon and utilised in a more reliable way.
If they were to battle with their wits, Richard would win hands down. His ability to think through a situation is second to none.
I can’t say for certain who’d be left standing at the end, but I do know that both of them would give it their all. Perhaps that is why they have endeared themselves to me for so long – because they’ve always stood up for what they believe in – and in that, they are equal.
In that, they are unmatched.

Muse says,
I have to say i think you thought thus through pretty well. But, becasue i'm a psycho fan (jk!) i think richard would win.
Ok. I'm not being fair. But hear me out.
One, Richard is a man. A big, strong, hot man with awesome abbs. But still a man.
Two, who cares if his power comes when he needs it and is more a thing of will? I think that if he willed himself to win, that if he willed his power to BE then he would kick link's little arse from here to D'Hara.
Three, the Sword of Truth needs no recharging and, Link would be screwed because his sword has the power to fight evil and the fact remains that Richard is NOT evil. Richard also has all the past users, as you've pointed out, of the sword of truth's knowledge. So there.
Four, Richard is wicked smart. Wicked. It even shows in the show that he's a smarty pants and can outwit people and beings. He probably wouldn;t even have to fight Link. he'd just use that level head of his and end it before it bagan.
Five, you also gotta put strength as a factor. Richard is strong, but not just of body, but of heart, mind and soul. You think Link is courageous? Richard is crazy courageous. Sure Link stood uo to the bad guy as a child, but did Link have to take responsilbility for a whole empire and rule their people, save the whole world, practically, and have to rule it too with a fair, just hand? Richard may have been an adult taking on the world, but he was far from prepared, far from knowing what the right thing to do was. His courage and his bravery and him knowing that what he did was right helped him through it all and had left me with the best immpression of him.
I read the books too XD!
Richard also has love. The deepest, most heartfelt, most TRUE and PURE kind of love there is.
That helps.
So, i'm not trying to be unfair to Link. He's good and all and he tries, but...
RICHARD SO DOMINATES!
And that is why i've gotta say that Richard would win in a battle against Link.
