Early 2011...A New Richard and Kahlan Novel

You asked, we answered!

Here at Legend of the Seeker we have a brand new feature for you to get stuck into. It's called the Mailbag and it's place for you to ask any Seeker related questions you may have. It replaces the ever so popular FAQ section which had over a staggering 900 questions in its lifetime; but alas, it was becoming increasingly harder to maintain and keep up to date.

It's to this end that the Mailbag was born. We've already had some great questions sent in by some of you that I've answered and published in our first ever issue! Unsuprisingly, a lot of questions were about whether or not series 3 will happen. You can read what I think and more by visiting our first ever Mailbag.

The main difference between the Mailbag and the FAQ section, is that you can now share your own views on the questions asked by using the new commenting feature (which is located at the bottom of the page.) The more the merrier!

Finally, don't forget to send us in your questions if you'd like them to be published in next week's issue.

TVStar interviews Bridget Regan

TVStar recently interviewed Bridget Regan and asked questions as posed by the fans. There's some truly original questions thrown in there, can't wait for part two.

And yes, I picked up on the whole POWERFUL MAGIC line that Zedd is partial to throwing about anytime something goes wrong too, did you? Still, it's not as bad as Shota's most recently over-used line: DO WHAT MUST BE DONE.

On to the interview...

You had lots and lots (and lots) of questions for Bridget Regan and, as promised, the lovely leading lady of Legend of the Seeker has taken the time to reply to 20-plus of them. We at TVStar.com think you'll agree that her answers are by turns fun, serious and informative -- and this is only part one of our exclusive interview.

The first-ever scene in Legend of the Seeker shows you riding a horse through a beautiful countryside, chased by ugly D'Harans. I think it drew a lot of people into the show. When you shot it, did you know that scene was, in a sense, going to introduce the show and could possibly make or break it? How much pressure did you feel shooting that scene? [darkbahamut88]

Maybe it was a bit daunting. I knew that it was the first time the audience would meet Kahlan...meet MY Kahlan. The script said, "a fierce warrior of stunning beauty and great courage." Needless to say, I had fallen in love with her, and I wanted to do her right. Do her justice. But in the last moment, I had to let that go. (I had to) concentrate on getting to the boundary and finding (Richard) and putting the book in his hands...and cantering in a corset for the first time and not falling on my bum...

The Creator has a face!

We've known for some time that Keisha Castle-Hughes will play a powerful mystery woman who claims to be the Creator - but now we have the proof!

Richard, Creator

Keisha will feature in the aptly named episode "Creator" which should be airing in the coming weeks.

The writers are obviously going down the Dogma route by making the Creator female. Is this really the Creator though, or is she under the spell of some POWERFUL MAGIC?!

Time will tell.

Vote for your favourite fantasy costume!

Last week I helped the Sci Fi team decide on the final top ten fantasy costumes for their fantasy competition. The amount of effort and work that went into some of the costumes was quite simply amazing.

But it doesn't matter what I think - only what YOU think. So head over to Sci Fi and vote for your favourite fantasy costume.

Thanks to everyone who took part in our Fantasy Costume Contest. We've had some exceptional entries; from bizarre and mind-blowlingly impressive to downright bonkers. But unfortunately not everyone can be winners.

On Tuesday our judging panel (made up of SCI FI Channel team members and Tracy Casebere from Legendoftheseeker.org) congregated in a closed room and thrashed out their top ten and now it's time to vote for the outright winner. All the below entries are winners, but who is number one? Only the entry with the most votes will win the £100 Forbidden Planet voucher, so don't delay, vote your fave costume now.

The poll closes on Friday 12th March. The winner will be announced thereafter.

Design a t-shirt competition

Because the lovely people over at ABC have allowed the creation of fan merchandise for the Legend of the Seeker television show at CafePress.com, we thought we’d take this opportunity to see what you can come up with.

Your task Dear Seekers, is to come up with and produce an original design for a t-shirt that is Seeker related. There are of course, certain restrictions (but a lot of freedom too) so be sure to read the terms and conditions fully before entering.

The winning prize is a $100 CafePress Gift Certificate and a Legend of the Seeker fan pack (t-shirt, water bottle, bag...)

But that's not all. Anyone entering the competiton will also have the ability to make some cold hard cash – providing you add it to your CafePress shop to sell. Want to know more? Read our "Design a t-shirt competition" page.

You can help Legend of the Seeker get a 3rd Season!!!

Major Updates

If you want to see a third season of Legend of the Seeker, then keep reading!

Mike Sussman, Writer/Co-Executive Producer of the show, has asked that we all write into our local Seeker showing stations and ABC/Disney to let them know that we want more of the show.

Why?

Syndicated shows, like LotS, are only on the air as long as stations are buying them so writing to your local (or not so local if you’re so inclined for all those outside of the USA) station and letting them know you love the show would really help. Follow this link to find a link to your local station: http://herblueeyes.com/2010/02/05/help-legend-of-the-seeker-get-a-3rd-season/.

Also, please be respectful and polite in your message, it really does make a difference. Running your message through spell check so it looks all nice and shiny couldn’t hurt either. Happy writing!

Don't know what to write? Then use a postcard! Speckles over on LiveJournal has created and collected a few postcards for people to use. http://community.livejournal.com/speckle_dots/20828.html (Thanks Alessia!)

These are the main TV stations you can write to:

Want to do more?

There's a Facebook group dedicated seeing that Legend of the Seeker gets another season here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=269657990457 (Thanks Dianne!)

Thanks to Lindsey @ www.herblueeyes.com

For international viewers, Mike Sussman said:

International folks who want to help should write to whatever broadcaster/network/station airs LOTS in their local area. The international audience is a big chunk of our viewership so it’s important you be heard from. If you’re an international viewer, and you’ve already written to your local “Seeker” broadcaster, a second letter to ABC Studios would also be helpful.

If you’ve been thinking of buying the Season One DVDs or downloading the episodes from iTunes, now would be a VERY good time. Those sales numbers are looked at closely by studios.

Thanks to Dianne for the comprehensive list.

Series 2 coming soon!

Don't worry, we know. Series 2 of Legend of the Seeker has already premiered in the US (lucky gits) but for us Brit's that's yet to happen.

Series 2 will be premiering in February 2010 on the Sci Fi channel and for those of you who have purposely kept yourself out of the loop so as not to have anything spoiled for you, I have written a mostly spoiler free article on what to expect.

You can read the full article on the Sci Fi website.

While you've been getting stuck into your new years resolutions the second series of Legend of the Seeker has been well underway over in the US. I know, it's not fair, they get everything sooner - except for New Year's Day - we celebrated that first! Ha!

Thankfully we don't have to wait much longer as the second season premiers over here in February.

Anyway, the last time we saw Richard he was busy sending Darken Rahl to the underworld. That's a bit like hell, only not as hot. Air-con is a life, er, saver.

And ONE of the good things about watching a fantasy series is that just because your favourite character dies (you won't believe how many Darken Rahl fan's there are - my Legend of the Seeker fan site is full of them!) it doesn't mean they won't make an appearance - or two.

IGN interviews Craig Horner

IGN recently interviewed Craig Horner about what to expect in series 2, amongst other things. Take a look for yourself and enjoy.

IGN: The love triangle that seems to be inevitable between you, Kahlan and Cara...where would you like to see that go?

Horner: I don't know if I would call it a...well, I guess it is a bit of a love triangle there. I think they might send us that way. I think they might send Richard and Cara that way. You never know. But it's a tough call. It's a massive relationship to have [Richard and Kahlan] and it's something that's beyond something sexual, because they can't really do that, so there is a really strong bond. It's really going to be hard to break those two up. But it's possible, so we'll see. [laughs]

Ken Biller's Spoiler Filled Season 2 Interview

Here's the entire spoiler filled interview titled 'Can Legend of the Seeker's Kahlan and Richard Hook Up Without Destroying the World?' that Showrunner Ken Biller did for E! Online.

Plenty of spoiler filled information about Richard and Kahlan's relationship and the Sister Nicci casting confirmation.

Season two of the syndicated fantasy series Legend of the Seeker has seriously taken things up a notch (all while keeping dastardly but dead hottie Craig Parker employed as Darken Rahl, no less!), and we are positively dying to know what happens next in the Midlands, so we dialed up show runner Ken Biller for the exclusive scoop on the remainder of season two.

Here's what we learned about the episodes to come, including the significance of Richard Cypher's (Craig Horner) detour from the throne, how Kahlan Amnell's (Bridget Regan) burden as the last Confessor could tear her away from the Seeker, and the magical loophole that might allow them to finally have some forbidden sex...

Season 2 Premiere Ratings

Legend of the Seeker season 2 premiere averaged a respectable
2.58 million viewers with a 1.7 household rating - 45th out of 129
syndicated shows.

It would be good to see how many promotional files of 'Marked' were downloaded from iTunes.

The season two premiere of Legend of the Seeker averaged 2.583 million viewers the weekend of November 7-8 with a 1.7 household rating. By household rating it was ranked tied for 45th out of 129 syndicated shows measured for the week.

The 2.583 million was the average audience, but you might wind up seeing the number 3.528 million thrown around, too. That’s the gross average audience for the premiere. Gross average audience is a metric commonly used in syndicated ratings where viewing of repeat broadcasts during the measured period *is* counted. But for apples-to-apples purposes of comparing to other shows you should use the 2.583 million number.

TV World review for episode 1 Marked

TV World has written up a review for episode 1, Marked. If you haven't already seen the episode yet then be warned, the review contains some spoilers (although nothing too shocking if you've already seen the ton of promotional images for the show.)

Over the summer and the early part of the fall, I decided to catch up on what is effectively the only high fantasy series currently on TV, Legend of the Seeker. Given the generic sword and sorcery plot and the Sam Raimi production label I went in assuming Seeker would be a latter-day Hercules or Xena venture, which is to say campy and thoroughly disposable. What I discovered is that, while the show still leans heavily on genre conventions and has a mostly limited cast, Legend of the Seeker is actually a fairly entertaining series with a more engaging sensibility than its pulp origins suggest. Season 2 premiered this weekend, either on Saturday or Sunday depending on local broadcasters. I plan on covering the show every week, if only because I don't think Seeker really gets the critical attention it deserves... Read More.

(2) A Mord Sith named Cara (Tabrett Bethell) has attached herself to Richard and Kahlan's little family out of a deranged allegiance to Lord Rahl, a title that Richard inherited upon the late (evil) lord's death... What originally attracted you to the show?
Well, it was the role. The character of Kahlan was not like any part I had ever auditioned for or played. So, I was immediately drawn to it. I thought that she was really tough and kind of timeless, epic and theatrical which I really was drawn to. I went to a drama school and I grew up doing theater, so I quite liked that the show was kind of heightened and it wasn’t the sort of low energy, common chit-chat show, it was big and epic and exciting and high stakes and all that which I loved... Richard Cypher was once but a simple woodsman, an expert tracker and explorer of the trails that run through and around his home town of Hartland, located in the province known as Westland. He was well liked by the townspeople, and looked up to his older brother, Michael, the First Councilor. Their father, George Cypher, raised the two boys after the death of his wife.

Life was an uneventful series of tasks and duties for Richard, until fate brought him together with a mysterious and captivating female, Kahlan Amnell. From a seemingly crazed old man, Zedd, the truth was soon revealed to Richard. He is a child of prophecy, the first true Seeker the world has known in a thousand years, destined to wield the powerful Sword of Truth and defeat the evil tyrant Darken Rahl.

And yes, Cara has brown hair. We know the books states she has a long blonde braid, but come on! Look past the superficial and concentrate on the performance.

The series is based on the books of Terry Goodkind. Were you familiar with them before you started filming?

Review: The Torch Online

The Torch Online, which is a website dedicated to exploring all things fantasy related, has posted an interesting review on the Legend of the Seeker television series. Being fans of the show Xena, they were actually put off of watching the Legend of the Seeker - but gave it a try anyway and were pleasantly surprised.

I really didn’t want to watch Legend of the Seeker.

I knew it was the latest syndicated TV series from Xena: Warrior Princess producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, but as much as I loved Xena, that pedigree actually worked against Seeker. Everyone kept saying that it was very much a straightforward fantasy project, and included none of Xena’s irony, humor, or wry self-awareness.

It’s not that I’m such a huge fan of irony — in fact, like the rest of the world, I’m getting pretty damn sick of it. But what was impossible not to like about Xena was its enormous risk-taking. The show was an almost dizzying creative explosion ...Read More

Interview with Bridget Regan

Deamon's TV has a really sweet, awesome, nice (insert other good word here) with Bridget Regan, who plays Kahlan Amnell. In it, she talks about how she initially went about auditioning for the role of Kahlan, and how she really enjoys reading Wizard's First Rule.

There are also a couple of other interviews with Bridget Regan by SciFiWire.com and AMCTV, which we've added to our archive..

Did you read all the books from “The Sword of Truth”?

Bridget Regan: No, I read “Wizard’s First Rule” and then “Debt of Bones,” I have a lot to go, because I keep going back reading ["Wizard's First Rule"] over and over again because… - I bring the book out to set because every time there’s a guy who has been confessed on the show, they’re like “what is this?…” and then I come over and hand them the book and go “here you go, just read it” and it’s a part describing what it feels like to be confessed, and they’re like “wow, thanks” and I’m like “okay, good luck playing that now buddy” (laughs), and then they go and they do it. It’s fun to watch because I’ve confessed so many men on the show, and seeing how each of them interprets it and plays it. At first I was going “oh it should always be the same and you need to make sure there is continuity with all of them,” but now it’s like “n,o I like the idea that this magical power would affect people differently.” And you know because it draws on love, it’s cool to see how different people play how it affects them, what their idea of falling hopelessly completely in love is. ...Read More

Read below for an excerpt.

UGO: What kind of reaction have you had from fans of the books?

Craig: I’ve notice a 50/50 split but I think lately fans are starting to come around to the show. I, myself, had to make the adujustment when I got the script. We love the characters and we were given permission from Terry Goodkind to work with this world and really develop it. For example we had an episode that aired a few weeks ago called “Denna” and we had a really postive repsonse from the fans. We were true to the book - the costumes and everything and we do try to give the fans a few wink winks here and there... Read more?

Second series?

For now we'll treat this as a rumour until it's been officially confirmed.

But, what do you think? I've had many messages from fans of the books who've been very disappointed with the show, they swore to never watch the show again. But, if it's been renewed for a second series, someone must be watching it (you). Do you think that people who haven't been exposed to the books, enjoy the television show more? New articles and video interviews

We've added two new article interviews to our archive. Sci Fi.com have yet another interview with Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi, Bridget Regan and Craig Horner. View an excerpt of the interview below.

Who's your audience for Legend of the Seeker?

Tapert: Who is our audience? Our audience is people who enjoy fantasy, and if you look at motion pictures, who went to see Lord of the Rings? Who went to see Spider-Man? Who went to see Iron Man? We're entertainment in a broad fashion. It has a heart and soul for people who want to be made to feel through what they watch on television. And it also provides a visceral thrill. It's got big action set pieces. So we're hoping that the audiences who once enjoyed Hercules and Xena, which, although not that same group of people, but that same demographic, would hopefully show up for this, along with people who have clearly demonstrated over the years that there's a huge marketplace in the theatrical world for hero-driven fantasy entertainment...More?

There is also an interview with Craig Horner from Newsarama.com.

“It’s really about the characters, the relationships, the love story, the politics, and all that,” he concludes. “When you are in another world that represents nothing of what you are used to in your own life, you can escape and start believing in these characters. Before you know it, you are invested in this world and buying it. The stakes become real. Okay, sure it’s the end of the world, but you get it because you are engaged by these characters.”... More?

We've also added two new video interviews to our Media section.

Hollywood 411 interviewed Craig Horner about the show and the books, how they are similar and about the direction the show is going in.

Better.tv interviwed Bridget Regan about her role as Kahlan Amnell, not much new stuff in terms show information, but Regan does talk about how she came to audition for the role of Kahlan Amnell. Both are worth a look.

And lastly, don't forget Bridget Regan is appearing on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show this evening in the US. Don't forget to check it out.

30-Minute Preview of Nationally Syndicated Action-Adventure Epic
Available as a Free Download Exclusively on the iTunes Store

Burbank, CA – October 27, 2008 - Action-adventure fans can enjoy a first look of the highly-anticipated epic fantasy series “Legend of the Seeker” before its November 1st premiere weekend. Beginning today, Disney-ABC Domestic Television is offering an extended preview of the nationally-syndicated series as a free download, exclusively available on the iTunes Store (www.iTunes.com). The free download, entitled "Legend of the Seeker: A First Look," will give fans the opportunity to view the first 30-minutes of the upcoming two-hour television event executive-produced by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, the team that brought the characters of Hercules and Xena to life almost a decade ago.

"Fans have been clamoring to get a first look at the series and based on the early response from the clips released on the ‘Legend of the Seeker’ website, we knew this would be a huge success with audiences," noted Janice Marinelli, President, Disney-ABC Domestic Television.

Shot with the exotic and rugged New Zealand landscape as its backdrop, the one-hour scripted series is an adaptation of internationally best- selling author Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth book series. “Legend of the Seeker” explores the adventures of woodsman Richard Cypher (Craig Horner, “Monarch Cove” and “Blue Water High”), who discovers that he was born to fulfill a prophecy of becoming a guardian hero to oppressed people. With the help of a mysterious woman named Kahlan (Bridget Regan, “Sex and the City” and “Six Degrees”) and a wise old wizard named Zedd (Bruce Spence, “Mad Max 2” and “The Matrix Revolutions”), he must stop a ruthless and bloodthirsty tyrant named Darken Rahl (Craig Parker, “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers”) from unleashing an ancient evil and enslaving the world.

“Legend of the Seeker" is produced by ABC Studios, marking their first venture into broadcast syndication. Sam Raimi ("Spider-Man," "Spider- Man 2," "Spider-Man 3" and "The Evil Dead"), Rob Tapert ("The Grudge," "Xena: Warrior Princess," "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" and "Cleopatra 2525"), Joshua Donen ("The Quick and the Dead"), Ned Nalle (production executive for "Xena: Warrior Princess" and "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys") and Ken Biller (“Star Trek: Voyager” and “Six Degrees”) serve as executive producers.

“Legend of the Seeker” has been cleared by Disney-ABC Domestic Television in more than 95 percent of the country, including all of the top 50 markets. The series will premiere with a two-hour event the weekend of November 1st (www.LegendoftheSeeker.com for times and channels).

Sci Fi interview, part two

Sci Fi.com have posted up the second part of their interview with Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert.

They talk about working together and how much creative freedom they had when creating the television series.

As always, we've added the inteview to our article archive.

How free are you to diverge from the books--or book, since you're primarily adapting Wizard's First Rule--and maybe take those characters in another direction? Or are you planning on following them pretty closely?

Tapert: We've actually remained true to the characters, and what we've done is we've taken aspects of the book, storylines from the book, and blended those into episodes that differ from the book or run tangentially. ... We've had to, in the world of television, create events that were not portrayed in the book but still remained true to the characters, the theme and what's happening within the overarching story within the book.... We've archived the interview in our Article Archive section. You can read part 1 of 2 right here. Part 2 of 2 will be posted tomorrow.

Keeping with Kahlan, what was it about Bridget that drew you to her for the role?

Raimi: Rob was the one who found Bridget and showed her to me. He'll have to say how he originally discovered her, but when I saw her I just thought that she was ... I believed her. I believed the things that she said. Obviously, she's striking. She's quite beautiful to look at, but a lot of actresses are beautiful. But she made these fantastic situations and fantasy situations, ... she grounded them by being very human and real. And when she expressed emotion, I was moved by her, and I believed her, and I thought we couldn't ask for anything more. Because these are stories of friendship and loyalty and self-sacrifice. And if you don't really believe the people in the center of the characters--if you don't really believe that they're rooted and someone really exists in a three-dimensional way--then those stories won't have the weight. It won't work at all. So it was her, I guess, ability to just convey that she was a solid, soulful individual. That's what convinced me. But Rob, how did you come upon her? ... More?

Episode 7 named!

It has come to our attention that episode 7 shall be entitled, 'Identity'.

What the 'identity' pertains to, is of much debate. It could be be several things and depending on how the writers have ordered the series, it could be the identity of Richard's parentage; Kahlan's status in the Midlands or some other unknown information we don't know of.

We've updated our episode guide to reflect the title of episode 7.

LotS: Elements from later novels

Bill Keveney, a reporter for USA Today gives us an insight into the upcoming Legend of the Seeker television series.

Spider-Man director Sam Raimi is taking on a different heroic tale as executive producer of Legend of the Seeker (Nov. 1, check local listings), based on the Sword of Truth novels by Terry Goodkind.

"It's an exciting story of heroes, and it's a love story. And it's got a lot of action," Raimi says.

In Seeker, Richard Cypher (Craig Horner) and Kahlan (Bridget Regan), aided by the wizard Zedd (Bruce Spence), are on a quest to stop tyrant Darken Rahl (Craig Parker) from releasing an ancient evil. The first season will track Wizard's First Rule but will include elements from later novels, says Rob Tapert, also an executive producer.

Raimi and Tapert produced Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.

The new series should appeal to families, as those earlier shows did, but "it's a little straighter in its tone, a little bit more serious of a drama," Raimi says. —Bill Keveney
